Divorce Day 2025: new video from LGFL
In a new video, LGFL Managing Director Rita Gupta explains why in her experience, "Divorce Day" doesn't exist, and why taking legal advice and time to consider is so important.

“Does Divorce Day exist?
Traditionally it's said in the media that the first Monday after we return from the Christmas break is Divorce Day, when lots of people decide to get divorced. I'll say my experience that's generally not the case, and I haven't found that the phone's been ringing off the hook today.
Generally people will have thought about this for much longer. There is going to be an increase in divorce enquiries in the new year, perhaps towards the end of January when people have paid for Christmas. Or often in February, but people don't magically decide to get divorced on one day. Usually there are a number of other factors coming into play.
Firstly, they've thought about it before but wanted to progress it in the new year to ensure that the holiday period goes successfully, and that you do not put pressure on the family, particularly. That’s a child focused approach.
So we had a lot of people contact us in December to take some advice. They've (now) reflected on that advice, and they're likely to want to progress matters in the new year.
There's also those marriages that were already in difficulty. People were considering divorce before, but wanted to give it “one last Christmas”. They wanted to see if the marriage could be salvaged, but Christmas is a stressful time. The financial pressures, the pressure of getting everything so perfect, the fact that you're all together, often with extended families, can just add pressure to a marriage that already has problems.
So I don't think divorce day exists, but it is going to be the case that in the new year, people are going to make decisions, life changing decisions, about progressing matters.
My best advice to you is not to rush anything through. Don't just go online and issue your divorce application. Take some advice, even if it's just a one hour consultation. Have an overview of the divorce and financial and child arrangements process before you take action.
And then you'll make measured decisions about what is a life changing decision.
